The puzzles are very well thought-out and complex, and to solve them you need to use skills ranging from code-breaking to creative thinking to logic, and a big dose of patience will come in handy, too. Each problem solved was rewarded with special effects lights, videos, or a door opening – we really felt as if we were in a movie. The timer started, and we jumped to remove our blindfolds and solve the puzzles. A cool draft floated in from the corridor. We checked the barred doors – they were pretty secure, all right. While we sat there, waiting for the game to begin in earnest, it was easy to imagine what the women who were imprisoned here would have been feeling. The door clanged shut and the key turned in the lock. We were led around the corner, into the womens’ cell block, and then into a sterile cell with off-white concrete walls, cold benches, concrete table and a steel toilet bolted to the wall. We reluctantly handed over our phones, put on blindfolds, and entered “C.U.S.P”., a prison that is said to be inescapable. When we enter the game, our ‘mug shots’ were taken and the ‘warden’ gave a stern message that we were here ‘for life’. The prison-themed escape room by Crate Escape is set in the basement of the former law court amid 300 square metres of real detention cells, interview rooms and guard offices. Though we had experienced one escape room before, we did not feel like experts, so when given the option between an easy and advanced room, we took the easy one. Our hearts started beating a little faster as we were continued through the gloom and around some twisty corridors into a holding cell.įor those who have never tried an escape room before, these are themed ‘rooms’, or a series of rooms, where a team of people are locked in and then have to work together to solve puzzles in order to decipher how to unlock the door. When we arrived at the escape room, we were greeted by the friendly host, then led down through a huge black garage door and into a dark, underground parking space. If you have ever wanted to be in the middle of the action during a movie or video game, then Crate Escape is for you.
